Wood Trains Beginners Guide

Posted on March 5th, 2010

As a parent who loves seeing his children enjoy creative play and having fun with Wood trains, I myself was once confused over how to introduce wooden trains to my children. Here are some things to look our for as you plan to buy wood trains:

Start Small
Every child is different, and your child may not take to trains. Because of this, it is best to start with the smallest set available, usually an oval configuration with a couple or trains included. Almost all of the big brand names that make wooden trains like BRIO Train have these type of sets.

It is best to stick with quality sets
There are many companies that manufacture wooden trains and train sets, but when purchasing for your children it is best to buy from a well know reputable company that has a good reputation for producing quality toys. One such brand is Thomas Wooden Railway which is manufactured by Learning Curve, a company that has a very reputable reputation. These quality made wood trains are based on the characters from the award winning show and movies of Thomas and his Friends. Another quality brand is BRIO, who has made the BRIO engine for almost a hundred years. They are a global company that is recognized for their innovation and quality. Other companies that make wooden train sets are Melisa and Doug and Imaginarium, both lesser known but still make quality wood products.

Look to expansion when your child is ready
What is nice about the major name brand sets like BRIO and Thomas Wooden Railway is that you can easily mix and match the track pieces and the trains work with each others tracks. There are a ton of expansion ideas from different track pieces and sets, tunnels and bridges and some very interesting engines. Just see how your child reacts to his wooden trains and you will know whether or not it is the right time to expand.

For every child, let them user their imagination and have fun. With the right wooden train set, your little conductors will be busy for a long time.
