Easy Steps To Make Your Office Greener

Posted on December 22nd, 2008

Whether you work from home or at an office away from home, there are ways you can make a contribution to the environment and help slow down global warming. Here are some ideas…

First, go paperless. Switching to electronic billing is a great way to reduce the amount of paper that you consume, saving trees and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the process. A lot of people are afraid of online billing and banking, but the truth is that it’s probably safer than snail mail. A large portion of identity theft occurs from people going through your garbage, which is obviously eliminated by doing billing online. As long as you keep your virus and security software up to date, you should feel secure doing your banking and billing online. You can even offer the option to your customers if you have the capabilities.

Second, you can save some energy by updating your electronics and appliances in your office. When replacing big electronics or appliances, make sure you opt for energy star rated devices which will save you money by consuming less energy. Also, switch out your light bulbs to energy efficient CFLs when they burn out. Switching appliances and light bulbs to more energy efficient models will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will also save you some money on your bills.

You can also implement a work from home program at your office. Home office equipment uses less energy and, of course, the commute to work can be avoided. As long as employees are reliable and able to work on their own, your office can help the environment by cutting down greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage in a heavy way by allowing employees to work from home one or two days a week.

Finally, if you own and operate a retail store, begin selling or encouraging your customers to bring their own reusable bags. Using reusable bags helps to eliminate the number of plastic bags thrown away and produced in the world. Plastic bags are slowly destroying our environment and their production consumes finite resources and pollutes the atmosphere.
