Paper products are very common in today’s world. Paper bags. Paper cups. Paper plates. Plain old paper. The list is endless. The problem is that the production and disposal of all these paper products is harmful for our environment. Beyond the obvious deforestation, pulp mills consume an enormous amount of energy and water and contribute to both air and water pollution. Further, paper products are some of the more common items found in landfills, due to their “disposable” nature. Thankfully, we can mitigate these negatives by reducing our individual paper consumption and making better choices about the kinds of paper that we purchase. For example, reusable bags can be used to replace paper bags, cloth napkins can replace paper napkins, and products from recycled paper can be used more often.

In order to have a smaller environmental impact with paper products, we need to begin by reducing our use of them (obviously!) and reusing products whenever possible. Instead of reaching for the roll of paper towels to clean up a spill, why not use a dish towel? Or, instead of using a fresh piece of paper to write your grocery list, start using the back of a receipt or the back of and envelope that a piece of mail comes in. These all seem like minor things, but if you think of the combined impact that it could have if everyone started doing this, we can have a pretty profound impact.

The US EPA estimates that paper products made up the largest share of municipal solid waste in 2006, accounting for roughly 36% of our solid waste. The good news is that about half of this was recovered for recycling or composting, but a lot of paper still made its way to landfills, where it won’t decompose due to the way that landfills are managed. While a step in the right direction, recycling is not the cure-all that many people believe it to be. Recycling still requires energy and water. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that paper mills do use approximately 40% less energy when they produce paper products from recycled materials when compared to starting with fresh lumber. Recycling also uses fewer chemicals and, of course, is much less detrimental to forests. However, the EIA also estimates that it requires more fossil fuels to recycle paper products than it does to begin with fresh lumber. So, there is no doubt that reusing and recycling paper products has a smaller environmental impact than using new paper products but that is not to say that reducing our use of paper products overall (recycled and new) is not more beneficial.

Further, the paper industry is one of the largest polluters in North America. Bleaching paper towels and notebook paper requires the use of chlorine which in turn produces toxic pollutants like dioxin, which has been linked to hormone disruption, cancer, and birth defects in humans. Paper mills themselves also release organochlorines into waterways which is damaging to organisms that depend on fresh water to survive. This is the case regardless of whether the paper mill is producing new paper or recycled paper. Pulp and paper mills also contaminate our air, emitting pollutants like nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and others. To lessen the impact that we have, we need to begin using fewer bleached paper products and reusing paper when we can…even stopping our use of paper products all together in place of reusable alternatives like organic cotton bags and plain old plates (ceramic, plastic, etc.).

Finally, we can’t forget about the fact that making fresh paper requires the harvesting of millions of acres of forest (trees) every year. Deforestation causes a number of problems. It destroys animal habitats, putting species at risk for extinction. It reduces the amount of carbon dioxide that can be turned in to oxygen which increases the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. This in turn can contribute to global warming. Finally, the process of cutting down trees in and of itself consumes a large amount of fossil fuels and generates an unnecessary amount of pollution. According to the Environmental Defense Fund, over one third of the wood harvested in the United States is solely for the production of paper products. Again, we can lessen these impacts by recycling paper products, using recycled products, and beginning to use less paper products in general.

The cost wind energy differential is relatively minor these days, since technology and innovation have driven down prices by 90% in the past two decades. A modern residential wind turbine can lower electric bills by 50 to 90% in most parts of the country.

The way this works is that you place your unwanted items in the box and pass it on to the next person on the list. He or she chooses items, and adds unwanted items to the box and sends it on its way. When the box makes it back to you, any of your original items get donated to charity, and you start again.

5. If things get broken around the house, see if you can find another use for them. Plastic utensils that you do not use in the kitchen anymore that are not broken and are safe may be just what your child is looking for to put in their play kitchen or to use with their play-dough set.
