The Renewables Obligation The Uk

Posted on November 29th, 2008

The RO is the main financial support scheme for large-scale generators of renewable electricity. The renewables obligation is set at a level which varies year by year. The level of the obligation is not the same as a target. The obligation is set at a level of electricity supply from renewable sources just above that which the government expects the market to deliver.

The renewables obligation has been extended recently (UK pre-budget report).

The Alistair Darling MP has stated that the Government’s desire remains, despite the economic downturn, not to let the current economic conditions impact negatively on spending on renewable energy and other environmental projects.

“Action to achieve environmental goals remains a high priority,” he stated in his address to Parliament. Of key importance, the pre-budget report states that the Renewables Obligation will be extended until “at least 2037”, in order to encourage increased investment in renewable energy technologies.

The extension has been granted in order to make sure that investors will be able to plan with confidence for the future. The most important point here being that over the next ten years the market will grow to deliver the ever increasing number of renewables schemes that are needed to achieve the target for 2020. Electricity distribution and sales companies are encouraged to source increasing percentages of the electricity they sell (5.5% in 2005/06 which needs to rise to 15.4% by 2015/16) from renewable sources.

Watch our video about the use of biomass as one of the renewables Energy Projects

The Renewables Obligation is popular with the public. In fact it is designed so as not to affect consumer bills in any significant way. It acts as an internal incentive for the supply companies to buy a fair, and growing, share of renewable power including the relatively more expensive renewables such as biomass and some novel marine technologies.

Within the next few years renewable electricity generated from wind farms will meet the needs of an additional three million UK homes. Using the latest turbine technology, only 2,000 onshore turbines would be sufficient to meet this target, or a fewer number installed offshore where wind force is greater.

Wind farms are going to be the major beneficiaries of the RO in the short to medium term. Greenpeace has coined the term ‘power stations at sea’ which we think sums it up beautifully. It’s the only technology that exists in sufficient capacity to make a dent on the challenging nature of the targets,” say the experts.

In 2004 there were six offshore wind farms in operation in the UK which then saw another seven under construction and planning submitted for a further four. The pace has hotted up a lot recently and now many more are planned and being built.

The first offshore wind farm was the North Hoyle installation, built in 2003 and located in the Irish Sea off the coast of North Wales. Current large wind turbines are many times as tall as churches or trees, being over 100m to tip of blade. These wind turbines are on the scale of large industrial plant and can cover large areas.

Windfarms is not the only form of renewables Energy Projects. There are many others, such as:

  1. Hydro-electric
  2. Biogas
  3. Wave
  4. Anaerobic Digestion

Advantages of Solar Energy – Benefits for Personal, Financial, and Environment

Posted on November 29th, 2008

People can obtain lots of advantages of solar energy. Solar energy actually converts the sun’s rays into electricity with the help of solar panels. It gives us the cleanest energy since it does not produce any harmful emissions. Furthermore, solar energy is an inexhaustible source of energy. As long as the sun still shines, we can get the advantages of solar energy.

Towards a Greener Earth

Non-polluting energy is one of the foremost advantages of solar energy. In addition, it’s also silent. The solar cells extract the energy from the sun without any sound. You can figure out the advantage of shifting to solar energy when you compare it to the other finite fuel. The solar cells have no moving parts so the maintenance is easy and almost negligible. Furthermore, the cells have a long lifetime use.

Unluckily, the initial investment on solar panels and the installation of the system requires lots of money. You’ll find that it costs more than thousand of dollars. However, after in the long run, you’ll get the advantages of solar energy excitedly since it can cut down your energy bills. You’ll get the advantages of solar energy exceed more than the way you spend money for the initial cost.

As the solar panels have a longevity use, once the investments costs are met, there is no more drain only gain. When the system is installed and functioning well, you are free from blackouts and power failures and no more at the mercy of power generating companies.

The initial cost of solar energy is the disadvantage of using solar energy. Solar energy at present costs twice as much as traditional sources of power generation which is coal and oil. However, as natural sources of coal and oil run out, the cost of producing energy from such sources will increase.

The other weakness is that it’s only possible to generate electricity during the daytime. But with provincial grid system or good battery backups, the distribution and flow of electricity is maintained to an optimum intencity.

The advantages of solar energy generation gain its fame in most of people. Recently, to produce electricity, you don’t need massive power plants with expensive machinery. The electricity can be supplied at home without annoyance or any noise to people living in the area. Furthermore, the installation of the system is also maintainable and very easy.

Explore more about the advantages of solar energy, since there are many things you haven’t known and will be answered only if you visit the links here! These guidelines will make you smarter about solar energy!

National Floors Direct: An Affordable Look At Flooring

Posted on November 28th, 2008

Wallpaper came down, paint went up, and things began to get a little better. When I got to the point where I could start taking the old carpet out and replacing it with something a little more to my taste, I needed to find affordable floor covering that still looked good. My plan was to start in the entry and kitchen since that’s the first thing visitors would see, but I knew I’d need to replace it throughout the entire house at some point so cost was definitely an issue.

About a year ago, I purchased my first home. It’s a nice place, not too big, but there’s more than enough room for myself and the occasional guest. It had one major flaw when I purchased it, though. The previous owners had bought the house in the 70s, renovated it, and then made no more updates. Maybe it’s just me, but 70s decor is just not just not my thing. Between the shiny foil wallpaper and the tye-dyed carpet-I hadn’t even known that tye-dyed carpet existed-there was a lot of work to be done.

National Floors Direct was one of the major service provider in flooring that I took a look at. This place was recommended to me by a friend who had renovated his kitchen in hardwood and as I liked the renovated kitchen there I decided to give them a try. National Floors was not only place I checked out, but my decision tilted toward them as they offered to come in to my place to compare various samples against my walls as it would have been impossible for me to go into a shop and imaging how the offered ware would look in my place.

I didn’t have the budget for hardwood, but the laminate selection they had was fairly wide and I there were several options that fit well with my cabinets and countertops. (Those, fortunately enough, were not bright orange or anything else particularly hideous so I haven’t needed to replace them.) I ended up selecting a laminate that looked like cherry that looks excellent in the entryway.

I noticed that the laminate prices at National Floors were quite comparable with prices in other places I checked; they were not either overpriced or overly cheap, but their range of selection was not too great. However, I found that that there was no additional charge for the stairs at the entry and in the kitchen and in addition shifting most of my larger furniture pieces was also included in their offer, and this made me decide in their favor.

The job that National Floors Direct did was very pleasing to me. Because of that, few months later I decided to hire them to carpet my living areas and bedrooms. The installation crew for the carpeting was different, but just like the first team, the installers were extremely professional and I am delighted with both the job they did and my house’s new appearance.

The representative from National Floors Direct visited my home, and wrote a contract to install wood flooring, and assured me that the price was unbeatable. He scheduled an installation at that time for the next day, per their advertised “next day” promotion.major service provider in flooring affordable floor covering. After he left, I went to Home Depot found the same Armstrong wood flooring that he sold me for much cheaper (including installation) than he quoted me for the 420 sf.Again, I canceled the contract and got another phone call from the salesman explaining his error in not examining my sub floor.

Solar Power Systems

Posted on November 28th, 2008

Whenever the sun is out, your home’s roof is exposed to home solar power. Why not harness that energy, reduce your electric bill and limit the amount of carbon dioxide you add to the atmosphere each day? Depending on where you live, your roof’s orientation, and the load your roof can bear, mounting photovoltaic cells (PVs) on your roof could be a valuable investment in increasing your household’s energy independence.

* What are PVs and how do they work?

Certain materials like gallium arsenide, crystalline and amorphous silicon, and copper indium diselenide produce electricity when they absorb light. This is called the photoelectric effect. solar power systems cells are typically made of a thin layer of such photosensitive material. Light hitting the solar cell raises the energy level of the electrons within. At an elevated energy state, the electrons are able to escape from their molecules and create an electric current.

* How can you tell if your roof is a good candidate for solar cell installation?

Solar cells work best when exposed to direct sunlight. Ideally, you could put a panel of cells on a motorized mount that follows the sun’s path through the sky, but that’s usually not practical for a roof. The next best thing is a roof mounting where the pitch has an unobstructed southern exposure. Depending on your latitude and the angle of your roof’s pitch, your PV system installer may suggest optimizing the angle of your PV modules with an elevated mounting rack so that they can catch more light.

You also need to be cognizant of how much weight your roof can bear. If your roof already has two layers of shingles, you probably shouldn’t add solar power systems panels to the load.

An alternative to solar panels is a relatively new product, “solar shingles”. These are shingles into which PV cells have been incorporated. If your roof needs to be replaced anyhow, solar shingles offer the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

Finally, PV cells lose efficiency as the temperature rises. In warm climates, you may be better off exploring alternatives like wind-power. In places like Florida and California, public utilities are bringing solar thermal electric power plants online. Such systems, though primarily feasible only for installations much larger than the single-family home, actually turn out to be more efficient and cheaper than PV systems when it’s hot.

* What components make up a roof-mounted PV system?

PV cells output direct current, and can be connected in series to increase the output voltage. Though there are specialized appliances available that run on DC, most PV systems have the cells send electricity through an inverter. This converts the solar cells’ DC to standard household alternating current. The output from the inverter is then integrated into the house’s electric system. Smaller systems mostly just supplement power from the electric company, reducing your overall bill.

If you install a larger system and make your home very energy efficient, you may have often had a surplus of electricity. You can either store this for later in on-site batteries, or feed it back to the electric grid. If you feed your surplus back to the grid, the electric company may actually pay you. This is called “net metering”, and is the law in more than thirty-five states. It’s a good deal for you, and it’s a good deal for the electric company because your PV system is most likely to produce surplus electricity exactly when peak demand occurs. Your surplus-producing PV system could actually help avert power outages.

* How much does a PV system cost?

The initial cost of a roof-mounted solar array can range from $6,000 for a small supplementary system to $30,000 or more for a large “off-the-grid” system. The capital cost of such a home-based PV system is rather abstract, though. It would be better to compare what you are currently paying per kilowatt-hour to an amortized per kilowatt-hour cost for a PV system. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, that cost is about $0.25 per kilowatt-hour. In most places, this is more than what the utilities charge.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that there are many state-sponsored incentive programs for solar energy. Take advantage of them, and you could break even. For information about these programs, you should consult the National Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy (DSIRE), prepared by the North Carolina Solar Center. The database covers incentive programs meant to promote the development of renewable energy.

In addition, the cost of the electricity your PV system produces is insulated from deregulation, rate-hikes, and inflation — that amortized twenty-five cents per kilowatt-hour cost will still be twenty-five cents thirty years from now. Who knows what your local electric rate will be?

And there’s more good news. By going solar, you are reducing the amount of coal and natural gas burned at power plants, you are reducing the amount of carbon dioxide we pump into the atmosphere, and you are asserting your energy independence.

Putting solar cells on your roof is an idea whose time has come. Home-produced solar electricity is feasible, makes sense, and is within the reach of most homeowners.

Reusable Shopping Bags Are A Better Alternative Than Paper Bags

Posted on November 27th, 2008

Today’s world is more eco-sensitive than ever and many people still think that paper bags are a better choice than plastic bags. They aren’t.

In 2006, the US Environmental Protection Agency released a report that said that paper makes up more than 30 percent of our municipal solid waste. Over 10 billion paper bags are consumed each year in the United States alone. In other words, there are 14 million trees harvested for their production.

When compared to plastic grocery bags, paper bags produce 70 percent more atmospheric emissions, consume 40 percent more energy, generate 80 percent more solid waste, and release up to 94 percent more waterborne wastes (According to the Film and Bag Federation).

This tells us that the energy consumption and pollution that paper bag production and disposal/consumption generates prevents paper bags from becoming an eco-friendly way to stop using plastic grocery bags. So what are the other, more preferable options?

The above information points us in the direction of reusable shopping bags. Reusable shopping bags are really the one true alternative for reducing the negative impact of disposable bags on our environment. With a growing number of manufacturers of these bags there is an increasing variety of availability in terms of sizes and styles. Make a socially and environmentally conscious choice for bag use today.

The New Stimulus Plan For Renewable Energy

Posted on November 27th, 2008

The New Stimulus Plan For Solar Power Sustainable Development

In the coming year when the new U.S. administration takes control over the economy. We will see a stimulus that will include green energy steps toward renewable energy . Since our demand for energy efficiency will continue to get stronger, eliminating carbon dioxide emissions will require adopting green energy practices. However, the cost has been prohibitively high for most of the commonly used and available methods. Generating energy from home has many possibilities, including getting a rebate or check from the power company for excess power that you’ve sold back.

One would hope that incentives given by the government will include, tax credits given to tax payers in some form of a credit on their taxes for energy efficiency purchases. Some tax credits were established under the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The credits can be taken on weatherization, windows, vehicle purchases and appliances. The specifics can be found out from the IRS, local government and your energy company. The credits are available to individuals and businesses.

The Next Step In Energy Efficiency Sustainable Development

Some local governments and state governments already give incentives to residents that are energy efficient. To find out if you qualify for such incentives you should contact you local power company and department of energy.
Rebates are a great way to get people on board with renewable energy. They can make someone choose an energy efficient product over one that is not. Energy efficiency incentives are something that may not be around forever, so go ahead and take advantage of them and move tward energy independence now.

Purchases of certain energy star appliances may make you eligible for rebates. These rebates are offered by partners of the energy star program. Many times your local power supplier will provide a list in addition to energy star.
Solar energy efficiency is very well the basis of the future of energy in this country. The homeowner will benefit from the incentives.

The Focus On Environment Renewable Energy

Public and private entities will benefit from the new administrations focus on green energy making the U.S. energy independent .

Solar energy is a favored renewable and it is easy to get . The new advances in solar energy are moving it quickly to the forefront of alternative energy sources. New equipment has been developed that allows for energy to be stored for use later when the sun is not out.

Several recent innovations in solar technology have brought us to the brink of affordable solar power that can be used anywhere. Flexible film solar can be built into just about anything, from awnings to bikinis. Now we will start working on affordability. New advances on how to put the flexible sheets together has recently become available. Even solar paint is on the horizon.
The next step to really getting solar everywhere as it should be it to have similar revolutionary advances in storage technology.

Green Living and Energy Efficiency: Simple Tips

Posted on November 26th, 2008

Energy efficiency and green living at home go hand in hand. In fact green living has a lot to do with organic food, the environmentally friendly items we use and buy, the building material we use and basically recyclable items.

But just to focus on energy efficiency, much of the electricity we receive is from non-renewable sources.

So what can you do about it and get closer to a green friendly home.

To begin, how about using less energy, without affecting your lifestyle and reducing your utility bills?

These benefits will stay with you whatever your source of energy, now or in the future.

Some ideas you can put into practice immediately are:

  • Change the type of light bulbs you have at home (if you can in the office – good for you). Use fluorescent bulbs that use about 20% of the energy traditional light bulbs use.
  • Unplug, what is unpluggable (without spoiling the food). Electrical appliances still consume energy, obviously at a lower rate, but still…
  • And the simplest of all. Turn off the lights and appliances when you are not using them.
